FORMAL LETTER: TO THE LOCAL COUNCIL

May 25, 2019 / General / 5:09 pm

You should spend around 20 minutes on this task.

Your local council has decided to give approval to build a new factory in your area, but your neighbours and you found it a bad idea. Write a letter to the local council.

In your letter,  you should say,
What possible problems you expect to face if the construction is approved.
What you would like the council to do.
Suggest an alternative to the council.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,

Write at least 150 words.

MODEL ANSWER:

Dear Sir,

I am a member of ‘Peace Valley’ residential association, located towards the Northern outskirts of the city, and I am writing this letter to express my extreme dissatisfaction on an approval you made to initiate the construction of a factory in my locality.

Last week, on the local daily, an article was published regarding the construction of a fertilizer unit at our locality. Since then it has been a serious matter of discussion in our neighborhood. All of us have concerns regarding the expected issue of pollution, especially the air. As we live in the outer ring of the city, our area is almost free from any sorts of air pollution. Even if the chemical factory is set to function keeping all the safety norms, the ‘risk factor’ would haunt us persistently. Hence, we request you to have a second thought on this matter. We would also like to suggest an appropriate location for the factory, that is at the Southern part of the industrial area.

I would be very grateful if you would attend to this matter as soon as possible.

Yours faithfully,
