While there arise appreciation for the recent imposing of special taxes on foods and beverages with increased levels of sugar, criticism too arise from another corner against this move. Both these opinions are topical in nature, and hence a detailed discussion is needed before framing a logical conclusion.

When special taxes are imposed on these consumables, the visible benefit which the supporters of this move highlight is the decline in the frequency and quantity of their consumption. If this occurs, there would be naturally a drop in the number of people who are affected with life-style diseases such as obesity and diabetes, as one of the key elements in the etiology of these diseases is the consumption of high levels of sugar. The tax-supporters think that such a move would directly reflect a positive leap in the field of health, and hence it is really appreciable.

By contrast, those who feel it is an unwise idea believe that the move is not good for both the producers and consumers of these products. To be precise, a special tax on these products would cut down the proportion of potential customers considerably, and this would affect the profit of the producer. Most customers know the potential adverse effects of these products, and they still prefer these because of certain other factors like taste and addiction. Even if added taxes are imposed, these products can still maintain a steady customer numbers and hence it proves less-effective for their customers, and they might think against the governments.

After analyzing both these views in detail, though it appears to many that added taxes on foods and beverages which contain high sugar would bring positive outcomes, I think feel, it would be fetching fewer benefits for governments, customers and producers of these products.
