Many people today find it difficult to balance the demand of their work and personal life. What are the causes of this situation and what can individuals and employees do to reduce the problem?

Finding a compromise between work and one’s private life is harder than ever these days, especially if one has a family. There are two major reasons for this, and these issues can be effectively tackled.

One of the major factors is the increased workload that many people have to deal with. Today, most people work in office-related jobs and they find that their employers expect them to stay longer or be available outside traditional office hours. On the top of this, the advancements of communication technology, ranging from telephones to laptops and smartphones have definitely accelerated the trend, because the modern man remain contactable. Furthermore, the economic stagnation has made the labour market increasingly competitive, and so workers are under pressure to cooperate in this process, making the situation worse. Hence, many find it difficult to have some quality time with their family. On the other hand, in rare cases, unexpected pressure from the family can cause problems at work, like absenteeism or low productivity.

Nevertheless, there are various steps that can be taken to mitigate the problem. Firstly, individuals should clarify with their employer the time when they expect to be free, thus ensuring some private time. Another positive development would be for the employers to allow more flexible working hours,so that staff can take time off for important family events during the working day. Lastly, employers could offer advice and coaching to staff in areas such as time management, stress control and relaxation techniques. This would help to reduce the anxiety that stems from heavy workloads and long hours.

In conclusion, one can say that technology and money are creating this situation, but also the employees and employers together can reduce its impact.
