There are differences in opinion whether to roll in a huge amount of money in the construction of high speed rail lines or to upgrade the existing public transport system. Both options are feasible in diverse situations and hence a detailed discussion is needed before framing a logical conclusion.

On the one hand, those who support funding a huge sum on high speed railway think that it would facilitate easy transport for a large number of commuters across the cities. They opine this can ease the traffic crises in metropolitan cities where bottleneck congestion is very frequent. Another advantage they point at is less pollution. These types of locomotives are electric and it hardly emits any toxic gases, which is hazardous to the atmosphere. They neither produce noise pollution. The mammoth investment needed for this can be generated back from the commuters in a span of five to ten years, they add.

On the other hand, those who focus expending on enhancing the existing public transport system feel that this would benefit a considerable proportion of people, especially in the suburban cities and the remote villages. This would also benefit those who travel within the metro cities. They opine that there should be more frequent services between the popular destinations. Suggestions are also made to make the travel more comfortable and safe, for example, by adding more leg space and by tracking the travel via GPS. This would make public transport system more popular. Wider roads and outer ring roads are other recommendations for its up-gradation.

After analyzing both these views in detail, I feel that the effectiveness of both the options vary in different situations. I also think that both the passengers and the environment should be considered before making a decision.
