Disputes exist regarding the effectiveness of punitive measures which are awarded to convicts. It is argued that educating people against crime is better than imprisoning the criminals. However, I think it is situational in nature.

On the one side, when criminals are confined, most people feel they are safe and secure. To be precise, the popularity of imprisonment lies on the belief that social unrest can be made minimum when anti-social elements are secluded in prisons for specific periods. There are habitual criminals who can hardly be corrected by any means of punishments including rehabilitation or education. In such cases, there is no best option other than isolating them from the mainstream, and hence it is better to complete their respective terms in prisons.

On the other side, one needs to perceive that many crimes are the consequences of ignorance about the legal proceedings and the stringent punishments. To be clearer, not many countries give enough significance to make their citizens well-aware of the legal systems. If the respective legal systems are well-defined to the public by means of a systematic educational process, it will definitely cut down the soaring rate of crimes, including cybercrimes, which very few people are aware of. Therefore, peace can be ensured in the society.

To conclude, the existence of prisons can be hardly questioned as it is proven as the best available option in certain cases. At the same time, societies can be made more secure when an established law-educating system is in place.
