The graphs illustrate the production and demand for steel in million tonnes, along with the number of workers employed in the UK steel industry in 2010.

Overall, steel production consistently exceeded actual demand across the year, with significant fluctuations observed in both metrics. Employment numbers also varied widely, showing a general decline over the twelve-month period.

Steel production peaked at 5000 million tonnes in February but dropped dramatically to just 900 million tonnes by December. Meanwhile, demand was highest in March and June, at 3000 million tonnes, but later dropped to zero in November. Despite these variations, production levels remained relatively stable from January to June, averaging around 4000 million tonnes. The latter half of the year saw more volatility, with production dropping sharply towards the end of the year. Notably, December was the only month in which the amount of steel produced was lower than the demand at 900 and 2000 million tonnes respectively.

Regarding employment figures, the number of workers started high in January at 5000 but saw a significant decline over the year, reaching the lowest point of 1000 in December. February had the highest employment at 5500 workers, which then steadily decreased. The workforce fluctuated slightly in the summer months at between 2500 and 3500 but continued to decline overall, dropping to the lowest number of just 1000 in December.

IELTS Writing Task 1 Pie Charts Main Reasons Why Students Chose a Particular University

Band 8.5 Model Answer

The chart compares the primary reasons why students chose specific universities in the United Kingdom in two years, 1997 and 2007.

A general overview of the data suggests that the suitability of degree courses remained the main consideration throughout the period. However, there was a notable shift towards considering proximity to the parental home as a deciding factor, while interest in universities’ social and sports facilities experienced a sharp decline.

A more detailed examination reveals that the proportion of students seeking proximity to parental homes doubled from 10 to 22%. In contrast, the importance given to good sports and social activities fell from 19 to just 6%.

Meanwhile, the emphasis on quality of teaching and resources showed marginal increases that ranged between 15 and 21% for both categories, suggesting a steady but not pivotal interest among students. The most popular reason, the suitability of degree courses, remained relatively stable with a slight increase from 35 to 37%.

IELTS Writing Task 1 Fire Exit Plan College Accommodation

* Note: this isn’t the actual diagram given in the test, it was recreated for the purpose of demonstration.

Band 8.5 Model Answer

The diagram illustrates the fire exit route for residents in a college accommodation in the event of a fire.

It can be clearly seen that the fire exit plan is strategically designed with two separate routes leading to distinct meeting points to ensure a quick and organised evacuation.

The layout of the college accommodation shows seven bedrooms, a corridor, and two staircases, with one of them located at the western end of the building and the other adjacent to the lift in the central part of the building.

Since the list is not to be used in case of a fire, occupants of bedrooms 1, 2, and 3 are directed to use the western staircase to exit the building. After descending the stairs, they are to gather at Meeting Point 1, which is located outside on the western side of the accommodation. In contrast, residents of bedrooms 4, 5, 6, and 7 are instructed to head towards the staircase on the northern side of the building. Those from bedrooms 4 and 5 have direct access to this staircase, whereas individuals from bedrooms 6 and 7 need to walk down the corridor to reach it. Upon exiting, they should gather at Meeting Point 2 located outside the building in close proximity to the staircase.

Band 8.5 Model Answer

The chart provides data on the number of students from the US, UK, and Australia who studied in other countries over a six-year period from 2002 to 2007.

Overall, while the US and Australia initially saw a decrease in students studying abroad, they returned to their original figures by 2007. The UK, however, experienced a continual decline over the six years.

Initially, in 2002, the US had the highest number of students studying abroad, with 50,000, followed by the UK with 30,000, and Australia with 10,000. Over the next two years, there was a decrease in the number of students from all three countries studying abroad. The US saw a reduction to 48,000 in 2003 and then to 46,000 in 2004. Similarly, the UK maintained its figure at 30,000 in 2003 but then dropped to 27,000 in 2004. Australian students decreased to 9,000 in 2003 and further to 8,000 in 2004.

However, in 2005, the trend reversed for the US and Australia, with the number of US students increasing slightly to 47,000 and Australian students returning to 10,000. The UK, on the other hand, continued to see a decline, dropping to 25,000. This downward trend persisted for the UK through 2006 and 2007, reaching 23,000 and 21,000 respectively. In contrast, the US and Australia maintained a steady increase. The US returned to its 2002 level of 50,000 students by 2007, while Australian students consistently remained at 10,000 from 2005 onward.

Band 8.5 Model Answer

The pie charts illustrate the sales percentages of books across five genres sold by a bookseller from 1972 to 2012.

Overall, it is evident that the proportion of Adult fiction book sales increased over the years, while the sales of Biography books exhibited a declining trend.

Initially, in 1972, the ‘Other’ books category dominated the market, comprising approximately 25% of total sales. In contrast, Adult fiction, Children’s fiction, and Biography books each represented 20% of total sales. Travel books constituted a smaller segment at 15%. By 1992, Adult fiction had taken the lead in sales at 25%, while Children’s fiction and the ‘Other’ category each accounted for around 20% of total sales. In the same year, Travel and Biography books made up 18% and 15% of sales, respectively.

By 2012, Adult fiction books constituted 45% of book sales. Additionally, Children’s fiction represented 25% of the market. Both Travel and ‘Other’ book categories saw a decrease, each accounting for about 10% of total sales. In contrast, Biographies had the smallest share of sales at just 8%.

IELTS Writing Task 1 Bar Chart of percentage of people who ate at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day

Band 8.5 Model Answer

The bar chart provides information on the percentage of men, women, and children that ate at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day from 2001 to 2008.

Overall, it can be seen that across the entire period women were the most likely group to have the necessary amount of fruit and vegetables in their diet, and children – the least. Still, by the end of the period the popularity of fruit and vegetables increased among all the participants in the survey.

A closer look at the chart reveals that women had the highest percentage overall, starting at 21% in 2001 and reaching a high of 35% in 2006 after a steady rise in the previous years. By 2008, the figure had declined slightly to 30%.

The ratio of men who had 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day was lower than that of women throughout the period. It remained steady at 17% for the first three years, from 2001 to 2003, but then rose to 27% by 2006 and declined slightly to 26% by 2008.

Children, whose figures were below those of men and women, started relatively low at 12% in 2001. The figure remained the same until 2003, and thereafter there was a noticeable increase to 17% in 2004. From then on, the figures continued to rise until they reached a high of 26% in 2007 before falling back slightly to 24% in 2008.

The table provides information about the fees paid by foreign postgraduate students in three countries for different subjects, as well as meals and accommodation.

It is clear from the table that Country A had the lowest fees for all fields of study and meals and accommodation, while Country B and Country C had noticeably similar, higher fees. Of all the countries, Country B had the highest fees overall.

To begin, the Arts and Commerce courses not only had the exact same fees, but they were also the lowest in the table, with $8,000 for Country A, $18,000 for Country B and $19,000 for Country C. The course fees for Computing and Science were close in all the countries. In Country A they were identical at $11,000, whereas in Country B the Computing course was $27,000 and Science cost $2,000 more. The figures for Country C were slightly lower at $24,000 for Computing and $25,000 for Science.

The fees for meals and accommodation varied significantly across the 3 countries. The most affordable cost of $8,000 belonged to Country A, followed by $11,000 in country C and the most expensive meals and housing costs ($17,000) were recorded in Country B.

IELTS Writing Task 1 Line Graph Different Fuels Production in UK

* Note: this isn’t the actual graph given in the test, it was recreated for the purpose of demonstration.

Band 8.5 Model Answer

The line graph gives information about the production of coal, gas and petroleum in the UK from 1981 to 2001.

It is clear from the graph that there was a decline in the production of all three types of fuel over the given time period, especially coal.

To begin, coal started out with the highest value of 127 million tonnes produced in 1981, and then plummeted to 51 million tonnes in 1984. Thereafter, the ratio recovered significantly to 106 million tonnes in 1986. From then onwards, the ratio has been consistently declining and eventually reached a low of 35 million tonnes in 2001.

The production of petroleum showed a slight increase from 96 to 100 million tonnes at the very start of the period. From 1983, there was a gradual decrease in production to a low of 79 million tonnes in 1989. Later on, from 1991 to 2001 the numbers remained relatively stable, between 80 to 87 million tonnes.

Natural gas production started at 72 bcm and increased for almost 10 years, reaching the high of 113 bcm in 1990. That point marked a start of gradual decline of around 5 bcm per year, to the low of 67 in 1999. Thereafter, there was a slight recovery to 72 bcm in 2001.
