With gratitude to our student L.R., we are sharing the latest Speaking questions from her IELTS exam in Canada:

Speaking test

Part 1 (Interview)

– Where do you live?
– How long have you lived there?
– Are there more older people or young people in your area?
– Do you like living in a neighbourhood with a mix of age groups?
– Do you like chocolate?
– How often do you eat chocolate?
– Do you usually give chocolate as a gift?
– Have you ever received chocolate as a present?
– On what occasions do people gift chocolate in your country?

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a person you studied with and got along well with. You should say:

– who the person is
– where and what you studied together
– what kind of relationship you had

and explain why you got along well with this person.

Part 3 (Discussion)

– Do you think it is important for young children to learn how to interact with others? Why?
– How can children develop good social skills?
– How important is it to work in a place where people get along well?
– What problems can arise if colleagues do not have good relationships at work?
– Do you think a boss can be friends with employees? Why or why not?
– Is it better to keep personal life and work life separate?

Our wonderful student took the IELTS test in the UK and remembered the following Speaking questions:

Speaking test

Part 1 (Interview)

– Where is your hometown?
– How long have you lived there?
– What do you like most about your hometown?
– Has your hometown changed much in recent years?
– Do you like buying shoes?
– How often do you buy new shoes?
– What kind of shoes do you usually wear?
– Do you prefer comfortable or fashionable shoes?

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a special talent of yours. You should say:

– what the talent is
– when you discovered it
– how you have developed or used it

and explain why this talent is special to you.

Part 3 (Discussion)

– Does everyone have a special talent?
– Why is it important to encourage young people to develop their talents?
– What kinds of talents are most valued today?
– Should parents help children develop their talents?
– Do you think talent is more important than hard work? Why or why not?

Thanks to the generosity of G.Y. we are sharing today the writing questions from her recent IELTS exam in Canada.

Writing test

Writing task 1 (a report)

The line graph below shows the number of cyclones worldwide between 1975 and 2000, divided into three categories according to their severity: mild, bad, and severe.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

– What do you usually keep in your bag?

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a time when you lost your way. You should say:

– where you were going
– how you got lost
– what you did to find your way

and explain how you felt during this experience.

Part 3 (Discussion)

– Why do some people often lose their way?
– Is it more common to get lost in cities or in the countryside? Why?
– Do people get lost more or less nowadays than in the past and why?
– How has technology changed the way people find their way?
– Do you think people rely too much on navigation apps nowadays?

IELTS Writing Test – General Training

Writing task 1 (a letter)

You recently had an accident in a supermarket. Write a letter to the supermarket manager. In your letter:

– describe what happened
– explain how the staff helped you
– suggest ways the supermarket could prevent similar accidents in the future.

Write at least 150 words. You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Writing task 2 (an essay)

In some countries, children begin school at the age of four, while in others they start at the age of seven.

What is the situation in your country? What do you think is the best age for children to start school?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

– How do you feel about being in crowded places?
– Are there many crowded places in your city?

– Is there a crowded place that you don’t mind visiting?
– Do you try to avoid crowds, or does it depend on the situation?
– Has your city become more or less crowded in recent years?

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a folktale that is popular in your country. You should say:

– where or how you first heard it
– what the folktale is about
– who the main characters are

and explain why this folktale is memorable or important to you.

Part 3 (Discussion)

– Why do you think children enjoy listening to stories?
– What kinds of stories are most popular with children?
– Do you think stories play an important role in a child’s development?
– Is it better to tell children stories or read books to them? Why?
– Do you think adults can also learn something from folktales? Why or why not?

Writing test

Writing task 1 (a letter)

You have been listening to a podcast regularly and would like to give some feedback to the person who manages it. Write a letter to the podcast manager. In your letter:

– explain when you started listening to the podcast
– describe why you enjoy it and why you listen to it regularly
– suggest some ways the podcast could be improved

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Writing task 2 (an essay)

Some people believe that children in the past had an easier life, while others think that life is easier for children today.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
