There are a growing number of care homes for the elderly people owing to lack of care and support from their own families. As a coin has two sides, this new trend too has both merits and demerits.

Turning to the positive aspects, the highlight is the professional care these people are expected to receive in a uniform set up. To be clearer, most elderly people have age-related ailments ranging from mild to severe, and they need constant medical supervision. This is best availed in most geriatric homes, as they offer superior standards of care including adequate nursing care and round the clock physician’s service. The environment is the next factor to be focused. Care homes usually occupy inmates of similar age groups, and would not feel loneliness as they would be absorbed in activities of their interests like playing chess.

On the flip side, one needs to understand that the emotional attachment a person has with his close family members is thicker than any other relationships. To be precise, older people want to spend their available time with their children and grandchildren at their own homes, even it is just an hour. They also feel secure and safe in their own homes rather than in care homes. The feelings of belongingness, security, comfort, provision of personal preferences and privacy are not adequately addressed in most old age homes. Finally, most of the elderly want to die with dignity, which they think is best possible at their own homes.

To conclude, it is to be understood that old age homes have become a part of the social structure. The popularity of these care homes can be attributed to the positive aspects they have, however they are not completely free from criticism.
