SAMPLE ANSWER:

It is common to see a higher proportion of retired people in today’s world when compared to the past. This might be because of the increased life expectancy, which resulted from the advanced technology. The situation evokes a mixed response in case of both individuals and society, and it is quite natural.

Viewing this from the individual perspective, those who are retired would definitely perceive this as positive. This is because, after a long struggling life including finding a job, making a family, bringing up children, and assuring them a promising life, the time left ahead of them is really invaluable. The longer this time, the better would be their satisfaction level. However, when they live longer, for example, to an extent when they become extremely tired, both physically and mentally, they would prove to be a burden for their acquaintances, including their close family members.

When the same situation is viewed from the social perspective, those who had already imprinted their personalities are expected to conquer more heights, and these people are seen as assets of the society even after their retirement. The society wants people like Sir Isaac Newton or Dr Edison to live more since they really expect more contributions from them. On the other hand, those retirees who still work in the popular employment sectors like engineering, medicine and arts would make the career perspectives of the youth in deep trouble.

After analysing the situation from both the angles (individual and social), I feel when retirees are availed with the privilege of longer life span, the results would not go to the extremes. In fact, a longer life span is what every human expect in his life.
