The world is facing a range of serious problems, and food scarcity is one among those. While some argue that genetically modified foods can mitigate this crisis, I have no option left other than agreeing with them.
To begin with, many countries of the world actively or passively fail in providing food security to their citizens. To be precise, ineffective management of agricultural resources, lack of support to farmers, corruption and trade tensions among the countries directly or indirectly affect a nation’s food security. The consequences of this range from the unavailability of quality food products to extreme starvation or death due to poverty.
Of the variety of options available, the most feasible solution which many countries tend to adopt is the cultivation of genetically modified foods. This is because it is much economical when compared to other alternative solutions. To be clearer, the need for very less space and cheaper investment make it more popular among farmers. The second benefit of this type of option is the lesser time for harvest, when compared to traditional crops. Last but not least, mass productivity makes it the favourite not only among the agro-producers, but also for those who look for cheaper and quality agricultural products.
This option is however questioned by some critics worldwide. The reason behind this is the less nutritious value they claim for such modified foods when compared to organic foods. I think this argument is less significant when a considerable proportion of the world population is starving to death.
To conclude, though there are some criticisms which object the selection of genetically modified foods as an option to alleviate the issue of food scarcity, I think in the present situation, it is definitely a key factor to resolve the crisis.
