One of the major concerns of those who seek environmental conservation is water pollution, which affects the aquatic bodies including rivers and lakes. The causes of this type of pollution are mainly attributed to the human activities, and the consequences it has on animals and to the mankind are moderate to severe in nature.

One of the main reasons why water bodies are getting polluted is the irrational disposal of toxic chemicals into these streams of water by huge industries. Many industries, even today fail to ensure a safe waste disposal system, and they expel waste to either water sources or to remote areas. Eventually, these chemicals get mixed with water, and water quality declines. The second reason is the disposal of non-biodegradable products including plastic to these sources. This is done by both by industries and individuals. When these items are not reused or recycled, water bodies are more susceptible to get polluted. Lastly, domestic wastes in many countries are channeled to either rivers or lakes, and this makes the water toxic.

Turning to the consequences, it is seen that, it not only affects the aquatic creatures, but also those animals on land that depend on these sources for quenching their thirst. Many such living beings have lost their innate features, and some have lost their reproductive capacity, which eventually would lead to species extinction. Human society, on the other side, too is affected with impaired physical and mental status, stemming from poisoning which includes led and mercury. The most severe consequence which both man and animals are vulnerable to is the ingestion of micro-plastics, which has more severe adversities.

To conclude, it is clear that human activities are the underlying reasons behind water pollution, which affects animals as well as humans. It should be also noted that this sort of pollution has more serious consequences than expected.
