Some parents buy their children a large number of toys to play with. What are the advantages and disadvantages for the child of having a large number of toys? Give reason for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Unlike in the past, it is common to see that today’s parents express their love towards their children by presenting them with abundant number of toys. When assessed critically, one can identify many visible advantages in doing so, however, disadvantages cannot be discounted either.

When children have access to a number of toys, the first advantage is that they can choose the toys of their preference, through which they can explore their interests. Some children may be interested in toys which foster creativity, while some in those enhances their problem solving ability. However, when a child has limited number of toys, it may affect his emotional and intellectual statuses. Secondly, it is the responsibility of a parent to present the right toys at the right age for their children. This is a challenging task, as each child has specific interests. The best solution is that a child needs to get exposed to a variety of toys.

On the flip side, the worst problem stemming from this is related to the child’s behavior. When engaged in playing with a wide variety of toys, a child would hardly find time to communicate with his parents or relatives, and this can affect his speech and behavior adversely. The basic issue here is addiction, which cannot be resolved very easily. The second concern is the hazards these toys can cause. Most of the toys today are made of plastic and in fact many of them hardly meet the safety requirements. As the number of toys increases, the vulnerability to injury also increases because parents may not be able to have an account of all the toys which their children play with.

In conclusion, it is clear that the provision of a large number of toys to children has both positive and negative impacts.
