The relevance of subjects in the school syllabus has been a pressing topic for years for both educationalists and common man. While some include History as a key subject in the curriculum, others feel, it stands a point lower than subjects like science and technology. Both views are relevant, and so a thorough discussion is necessary before framing a rational opinion.

On the one hand, those who believe History as one of the crucial school subjects think that it helps students to get oriented to the time they are evolved from. For example, it is vital for a school student to know how their ancestors survived and progressed despite adverse situations. They believe it is essential for a child to learn how people confronted unfavorable conditions like famine, drought or wildfire. In order to progress further in the modern world, people should know about their past, and this is best possible at school, they add.

On the other hand, those who value science and technology more than History at school think that these subjects are integral parts in the future of a child. They focus that these as inevitable for almost every new generation student to assume his desirable career. Almost every employment sector today deals with science and technology, while History has very less job perspectives. This naturally makes these subjects superior to History. There exists a widespread belief that a nation’s progress is directly proportional to the number of scientists and technicians, and hence it is mandatory to include these as critical subjects at schools.

After analyzing both these views in detail, I should admit that History is an important subject at school. However, I feel that science and technology has more significance as a school subject, owing to its future merits.
