Dealing with criminals and re-integrating them to the society are complex challenges. There are some who recommend education and skills training instead of confinement. I do not think this would fetch desirable results.
The cardinal reason why I believe so is because of the fact that criminals are persons who are needed to be isolated from the society either temporarily or permanently. The best way to do this is confining them in prisons for varying durations based on the intensity of crime they have committed. In this way, prisons ensure a peaceful society, with higher levels of social security. Therefore, the existence of prisons can be hardly questioned by many.
Turning to the effectiveness of educating these people or teaching them specific skills, in most cases, it would be futile. To be precise, very few criminals can take up a decent profession after being declared as ‘a criminal’. This might be because of their intense hostility towards the society and legal establishments which have played their respective roles in making them convicts. The society, on the other hand, see these people with an eye of suspicion even if they are highly educated or talented.
I have to admit that training criminals can bring some positive changes in their attitudes and life in the society to which they are re-blended. However, I feel this is not as effective as prisons.
To conclude, though educating criminals and enhancing skills among them can bring out productive changes in some criminals, compared to prisons, I feel it is inadequate.
