A controversy exists regarding the existence of zoos , when a section of the society demands their closure whereas others feel they are beneficial. Both these are strong arguments and therefore a detailed assessment is needed before framing a rational conclusion.

On the one hand, the opposers of the zoos feel that zoos exist on the principle of violating the animal rights. To be precise , these people consider zoos are areas of containment, where the wild animals lack freedom, which they enjoy the maximum in their natural environment. In addition,they point at the mental and physical ailment see among these animals when they are kept in captivity. They attribute this to the unnatural treatment these animals receive at zoos . Similar problems are seen among such animals related to their social and reproductive life, and therefore they consider zoos are totally irrelevant.

On the other hand, those who recommend the existence of zoos highlight these places are the safest areas where wild animals can survive in the current world . They believe zoos can safeguard the life of many endangered species of animals which would have disappeared much earlier. In addition, zoos have transformed their form to wild life reserve areas, where these animals can move freely in a specific protected area , which is very similar to their natural habitat. Under constant surveillance, these animals can be fed regularly and treated for any sorts of illnesses which would be hardly happen elsewhere. Above all, the zoo enthusiasts feel that these sources of containment areas can help both animal and human life in multiple ways.

After analysing both these views in detail, though zoos appear cruel for some, I think provided that they are properly maintained and staffed, there is no concern in the existence of zoos.
