The purposes of the overseas visits made by the UK residents and their destinations of visits by main regions from 1994 to 1998 are picturised in the given tables.

Overall, most of the UK residents went overseas for holidays and Western Europe was their favorite destination over this period.

As seen from the first table, out of 100,000 tourists on which the survey was conducted, majority marked their purpose as holiday throughout the period. Despite a decline of 348 visits in 1995, it ranged from 15,246 in 1994 to 20700 in 1998. The trend was similar in case of their frequency of visits to friends and relatives. Here, the decline was 61 and the number of visits ranged from 2689 to 3181. Business visits by the UK residents over this period ranged between 3155 and 3957, while a fluctuation is seen in the number of visits owing to other reasons.

Turning to the second table, it is clear that Western Europe was their favorite destination over this five-year period, with around one-fifth to a quarter of the sampled proportion. Visits to North America and other areas were comparatively low, ranging from 914 to 1823 and 1782 to 2486 respectively.
