Information on the quantity of commodities transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four modes of transportation is depicted in the given line graph.

In general, there was an increase in the volume of goods transported except via railways.

As per the graph, most logistic services were carried out by road transportation which was around 70 million tonnes in 1974. This was around 30 million more than that of the goods transported via railways and waterways. The UK’s dependency on pipeline for this purpose in this year was just around 5 million tonnes.

Significant hikes were there in the quantity of goods transported via roadways and waterways over the period. In the case of former, the figure hit just under 100 million tonnes, whilst in case of the latter, it went over 60. The volume of goods transported via pipeline grew over 20 between 1982 and 1994 , and finally got settled at 20 million tonnes.

The role of railways in goods transportation showed a lower profile between 1978 and 1998, when it went down by almost 10 million tonnes. However, by 2002, it climbed back to 40 million tonnes.
