MODEL ANSWER:

There is a wide spread belief in the society, that media promotes violence among them. However, I do think this cannot be completely justified because of some specific reasons.

To begin, the existence of programs which exhibits violence are common in the visual media which is evidenced by violent movies and reality shows. The print media is not far behind, and in the case of social media, the exposure of violence is at the maximum. Despite all this, it is to be noted that a considerable proportion of people stay away from violence and other anti-social activities. This certainly shows that there are other contributing factors, which sow seeds of violence in the society.

Another reason why I think the media’s responsibility in initiating violence is weak is that,l think it is the individual who decides whether to be violent or not. Their attitude, mood and behaviour play crucial roles in encouraging violence in the society. Similarly, in certain circumstances and occasions, violence is triggered in the society when media publicize violence. Therefore, one cannot blame media alone for instigating violence in the society.

However, one cannot underestimate the power of media in any form, as it can come up with provocative articles and visuals at any time, which may push the society into the depths of uncertainty. Yet,l think in the current situation, all types of media are contained by the respective governments and hence it can rarely promote violence in the society.

To conclude, I think only in the rarest situations media can independently promote violence and I believe, at present, this is less likely to happen.
