Undoubtedly one can say the increasing crime rate is one of the worst problems the world faces today. It is argued that this rate can be dwindled when the authorities focus primarily on preventive measures rather than punitive measures. I agree to this notion to a greater extent.

The fundamental reason why I agree to the viewpoint is because when situations are not favourable, criminals tend to supress their motives. Many crime incidents are reported in areas where lax security systems are there. For instance, the use of advanced security systems like high definition surveillance cameras and biometric locks in banks discourages the criminals from initiating their activity.

It is unwise for a person to depend totally on these systems. Constant vigil is recommended especially in maintaining a good cyber security. Awareness given by the authorities to the public to beef up this security by strengthening and periodically changing their passwords also has fetched positive results. Therefore, it is clear that preventive measures should be adopted first, and this can definitely bring down the proportion of crimes in any society.

It is to be understood that a considerable proportion of people abide the laws just because they fear expected punishments if they break them. For example, if there were lax rules and punishments, all these preventive measures would become futile.

To conclude, most criminal activities can be prevented by adopting appropriate measures either by tangible or virtual means. However, it is to be understood that the situation would be better with the existence of stringent punishments.
