Faster transportation facilities are the needs of any advancing urban population, and some think this can be best met by the construction of new railway lines. However, others criticise the huge capital needed for this and suggest improving the existing public transport. Both the arguments have their own validity, and hence a detailed discussion is needed before framing a conclusion.

On the one hand, the former group feels that the existing transport system cannot effectively cater the needs of the swelling population of urban centres, which has a pressing demand of quicker movements between commercial destinations. To be clearer, the economic activities in big cities are increasing in an unparalleled way, and this involves a large number of people. Unlike the past, people are not concentrating in a specific city for their economic needs, and therefore they urge to travel frequently between these places. However, they find the existing facilities of travel inadequate in both the cases of time and space. Here emerges the need of an alternative.

On the other hand, there exist strong criticisms stating that the move wastes exorbitant revenue of a country. Instead, they suggest the improvement of existing transport systems like express ways and upgraded vehicles. The main logic behind their attitude is that in many countries, people prefer alternate modes of travel to public transport. Infrequent schedules, over-crowding and bottleneck congestion are some of the highlighted difficulties behind this. Therefore, they recommend the respective authorities to give primary focus on this rather than spending huge sums on bullet trains, which can be a need of the future.

After having a critical analysis, it is clear that high-speed trains are the needs of a city, and of course huge sums should be spent on it. However, I feel that the primary focus should be the improvement in the existing transport facilities.
