It is a controversy for several years whether or not to set the retirement age. I believe in this current scenario, the existence of a mandatory retirement age for all workers appears to reap fewer benefits than what is expected.
On the one hand, when the retirement age is set legally at a specific age, the prime benefit the policy makers are expecting is the creation of job vacancies for the unemployed, who are eligible for the post. To explain it further, when an employee decides how long he can work, he might opt for a longer tenure, and this is likely to ruin the career perspectives of many enthusiastic job-aspirants. Instead, if a legal system is there, which regulates the retirement age, it would benefit these people.
On the other hand, when the personal preference is given, a worker can either retire at an early age or he can delay his retirement for another five to ten years. When assessed critically, the vacancies created by these retirements are fixed, and would hardly tally with the massive number of unemployed in each country. Therefore, to tackle the crisis in the most effective manner, authorities have to find better alternatives and should create newer posts for them rather than waiting for an employee to retire.
In my opinion, in addition to the aforementioned situation, when there is a set retirement age, most employees would wait till that age to get the retirement benefits, even if he feels that he should retire at an early age. Therefore, it seems to be less-productive.
To conclude, it is obvious that the ideal time to retire would remain a debatable topic. However, a fixed retirement age does not appear necessary in the current situation.
