There is no doubt that international tourism brings numerous benefits to many places. However, it has some disadvantages which affect the environment and the indigenous population. It is difficult to answer whether or not it has more disadvantages than advantages.

Turning to the positive aspects, the first is none other than the enormous revenue it adds to the country’s economy, and this is the main reason many countries spend huge sums on advertising to welcome international tourists. Other major benefits of international tourism are trade enhancement and infrastructural developments. When more overseas tourists arrive, naturally they require more facilities and this demands the local governments to introduce new commercial establishments, hospitals, hotels and transportation facilities. This would totally change the face of the place and upgrade the standards of living there.

Amidst of these advantages, many people are concerned of the expansion of international tourism because of its potential threats to the environment and the local people. The worst concern is the defacing of the natural geographical features of the place. For example, many trees have to be fallen, beautiful hills have to be levelled and valleys have to be reshaped for the infrastructural developments to facilitate the increasing inflow of tourists. Increased rate of pollution is another burning environmental concern. Even though many local inhabitants are employed because of international tourism, many have lost their cultural identity and a sizeable proportion is into illegal businesses and habits such as drug trafficking.

To conclude, even after making a critical assessment on the matter, it is hard to decide whether international tourism brings more advantages or disadvantages.
