Of late, schools are seen focusing more on teaching English, rather than teaching local languages. In my opinion, it has become a necessity to learn English in the contemporary world. At the same time, one should try preserving his own mother tongue by communicating in it whenever possible.
To begin, many may question the significance of learning English in a situation when many local languages are facing extinction. The answer is simple: English has become a global language, and in this globalized world, it is difficult for a person to survive if he does not learn it. For instance, if a person wants to take up a reputed job in an international firm, he should have proficiency in English. The situation is same if he makes important financial transactions or carryout commercial activities online. In short, as globalization is becoming more popular, the need of learning this language is becoming pivotal.
Having said that learning English has a greater importance in today’s world than that was in the past, one might ask the requirement of preserving the local languages. There is no doubt that one has got an innate love towards his mother tongue. To be clearer, each person has a sort of attachment towards his own ancestral culture and traditions, which are closely related to the language which has been passed to him through generations. Thus it becomes significant for any person to prevent his language from the verge of extinction.
In order to preserve the local languages, serious attempts should be made by the policy-makers. Implementing some laws which makes it necessary to communicate in mother tongue is one such move. However, better results can be seen when individuals take initiative to do it voluntarily.
To conclude, it is clear that without learning English, life will be miserable for any person in this world. However, it is also important to promote the local languages.
