Many students find it difficult to focus or pay attention at school nowadays. What are the reasons for this? What can be done to solve this problem?

REPORTED IN AUGUST, 2021

It is common to find many students facing attention-deficit problems or distractions at study in their schools. The reasons behind this can be classified into two: external and internal. It is to be noted that a comprehensive approach is needed to solve such problems.

When looking into the external factors which affect the child, the first one is the influence of technology. Unlike the past, these days, students are acclimatized to the advanced technologies like the use of smartphones and many are seen involved themselves in playing virtual video games. Another factor is the inappropriate environment they study. Factors like peer interference during studies, noise and climate can affect them. Ineffective teaching techniques can also affect the concentration level of a school student adversely.

Turning to the internal factors, it is a fact that the stress level of today’s school children is relatively high than that was in the past. To be clearer, they have to study more subjects and burdened with assignments and activities. This mounting pressure would make them difficult to focus on their studies. There are also instances in which students have problems with their cognitive skills. Certain physical problems too cause distractions among them.

As the problems are very diverse in nature, solving these would be a herculean task. Only an integrated approach which addresses both the external and internal factors can mitigate the effects of the crisis. This means that when students are provided with the best learning atmosphere with minimum distractions, the teaching strategies should be modified according to their mental and physical status.

To conclude, it is clear that there are both personal and external factors which can influence the concentration level of a school student, and the issue can be addressed only with a wholesome approach, focusing on both the factors.
