It is a debatable topic whether school-going children should be taught to be competitive or to be co-operative along with team-working skills. I feel both these skills are essential for them at different stages of their life.

On the one hand, the reason why some people favour to foster competitive spirits among the children at schools is because of the fact that the world is becoming more competitive these days. To be precise, there are fewer opportunities available for today’s people when compared to the past. This is true either in case when seeking admissions for a much demanded university course or in case of seeking a fresh profession. Even when they pursue their own respective career, such skills are essential in securing their post and to gain promotions. Therefore, these skills are to be taught at a very early stage at schools.

On the other hand, others feel co-operation and team working skills can be more beneficial and this is because of the fact that conflicts can slow down the progress of an individual and affect the healthy relationships in between. For example, a hospital, in which doctors, nurses and other paramedical staff work with co-operation and teamwork can achieve their goals better, rather than working as separate units. This also will uplift the goodwill of the hospital as a whole. By contrast, if they work individually with separate objectives, the result will be just the opposite. Hence, it is clear that co-operation and teamwork have their own relevance in the school curriculum..

After analyzing both these views, even though both the aforementioned characteristics are opposing in nature, I feel these are much needed at varying levels in different circumstances of today. Therefore, both have to be included in the school curriculum.
