Some people think the main purpose of school is to turn children into good citizens and workers, rather than to benefit them as individuals.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is suggested that schools should teach children to be responsible citizens and workers rather than moulding them as people who gain for themselves. I believe this suggestion has a great relevance today, but it is also important for a child to learn from his school how to reap personal benefits.

The first reason why I think the suggestion is topical in the current scenario is because of the unethical practices which are becoming more prevalent in the modern societies. Many responsible government workers are seen being a part of corruption by accepting bribes and other favours. This situation would not be beneficial for the development of a country, and would push it down to the depths of social and economic trouble. The best way to prevent this from happening is to inculcate the basics of responsibility of an individual towards the country and to the firm he works with.

Another factor which makes this as the main purpose of a school is because of their ignorance of people towards the responsibilities towards their country. To be precise, most schools concentrate on teaching children to equip them to gain a good career, and very few give significance to moral education and social responsibilities.

It does not mean that schools should not teach children the sense of competition in order to make them survive in today’s competitive world. However, I believe the main focus of school education is to mould a person a productive citizen for the society and to the nation as a whole.

To conclude, though it is important for schools to teach students how to survive in the present world of competition, I think it should focus more on making them good citizens and workers. If it happens otherwise, it is not good for both the individuals and the society.
