Overall, it is clear that the number of first marriages stood higher than the number of remarriages throughout the period.

As per the graph, in 1951, out of the total 450,000 marriages, 350,000 were first marriages. Despite a slight fall in 1961, the number of remarriages involving either of the partners rose gradually from 100,000 in 1951 to approximately 120,000 in 1981. During the same time, people in the UK who married the first time too crossed 420,000, making the total number of marriages to a record high of 550,000.

Between 1981 and 2001, there occurred a decline in the aggregate number of marriages. From 120,000 in 1981, the number of those who remarried fell back to 100,000. Similarly, the number of those who married the first time too fell back to 350,000.
