The process of generating electricity using water in various steps is portrayed in the given diagram.
Overall, it is clear that the hydro-electric power generation which starts from the storage of water in the reservoir till the power supply to various destinations is systemic in nature.
Firstly, the rain water which falls on the land after the natural processes of evaporation and condensation of sea water is stored in the reservoir. When the water level reaches the appropriate level in the dam, valve of the penstock pipe is opened. This allows water to reach the turbine which is placed below with immense pressure.
As the water falls on the turbine, it rotates swiftly. Here mechanical energy is converted to electrical energy. The electricity thus generated is supplied via high voltage cables to the transformer station. From there, the electricity supply is through underground cables to individual houses, hospitals or schools and industries.
Water, after the generation of electricity is pumped back to the reservoir to recharge the reservoir.
