There is a question whether the main reason behind the hike in the number of obese children in developed countries can be attributed to the increasing popularity of fast food outlets or it is the irresponsibility of parents. Both the arguments have their own gravity, and hence a detailed discussion is needed before framing a logical conclusion.
On the one hand, those who have the former view believe that most of the fast food outlets and similar establishments in developed countries sell unhealthy foods, which can trigger obesity. It is pointed out that these outlets promote tasty foods such as hamburgers and pizzas, which pull a sizeable proportion of tender population towards its proximity. As the number of these outlets increases because of an inclining demand, the proportion of young population those who consume these food items suffer due to the poor dietary quality of such foods.
On the other hand, those who hold the second view state that good eating habit begin early in a person’s life, long before children start to visit these fast food outlets. Parents play a crucial role in either introducing these places or such foods to their children, and when these visits or habits are established in them, it is hard to modify that. There are also negligence seen in the part of parents for not encouraging a healthy and balanced diet among their children. Hence, they believe parents are to some extent responsible for this ill-healthy situation.
After analyzing both these views in detail, it is clear both the increasing popularity of fast food outlets and the negligence of parents in their children’s eating habits are responsible for this adverse situation. However, I feel parents should be more vigilant in their children’s eating habit to mitigate the issue.
