Traditionally, elderly people have lived with and been cared for by younger family members. In modern society, more and more elderly people are living in special homes for the elderly. Why do you think families choose to have their elderly relatives live in special homes away from the family? What do you think is the best way for modern families to care for their elderly relatives?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Unlike the past, more and more elderly people are accommodated in special care homes rather than been taken care by their own younger relatives. There are two reasons behind this, and at present this seems to be the best way to care the aged members of a family.

The most tangible reason why this happens is because of the changing living style of the modern people. It is clear that most people are engaged in one or the other type of work these days, and a few are found remaining at their own home for caring children and the older population. In fact, the time a working individual spend with his family has reduced considerably when compared to the past. When children are sent to playschools and kindergartens, these people have to search for a safe place for their geriatric population.

Another tentative reason behind this is because of the professional care these organisations offer. To be precise, these institutions have specialised services for the old-age population like the services of a doctor, nurses, a dietician or a physiotherapist. It is a known fact that the aged are vulnerable to diseases, and these services cannot be readily provided at every doorstep. This makes these care centres even more popular.

Many people might criticise this trend stating that when these people are away at these centres, there would be lack of communication and bonding with in the family, which may eventually result in emotional desperation and isolation. However, I think, in spite of these challenges, these special centres are the best way to care the elderly.

To conclude, the primary cause of the popularity of geriatric homes is because of the changed lifestyle, and it is clear that the existing system would act as the best option, till another alternative is sorted out.
