There is a wide spread belief in the society that media in most forms promote violence among them. However, it is to be noted that a considerable proportion of people stay away from violence and other anti-social activities, and hence I cannot completely justify this argument.
To begin, the existence of programs which exhibits violence are common in the visual media which is evidenced by violent movies and reality shows. The print media is not far behind, and in the case of social media, this exposure of is at the maximum. In other words, media in any form, at any time have the power to push the society into the depths of uncertainty. Many unfortunate incidents like riots and homicides occurred when it came up with provocative articles and visuals. Many studies revealed that aggression and violence among the adolescents and the young adults are after-effects of violence portrayed on media, whether it is print or visual. For example, when programs related to crime are telecasted on TV, it passively sows the seeds of aggression among the people.
Nevertheless, l think in the current situation, all types of media are contained by the respective governments and hence its real potential to promote violence in the society is arrested to a great extent. It is to be also noted that readers, audiences or viewers of these media are more rational today than that was in the past. Moreover, l think, it is the individual who decides whether to be violent or not. His attitude, mood and behavior play crucial roles in encouraging violence in the society.
To conclude, I think only in the rarest situations media can independently promote violence and I believe, at present, this is less likely to happen. However, its power to do so cannot be underestimated.
