Young people spend less time on outdoor activities in natural environment, such as hiking and mountain climbing. Why? What can be done to prevent them from being indoors and encourage them to be outdoors?

REPORTED ON 17 FEBRUARY, 2022, PEN AND PAPER EXAM

In the modern era, young people are hardly seen interested in activities in the natural environment like mountain climbing, hiking or playing in open spaces. The core reason why this might have occurred is due to the transformed life-style of people, and this scenario is difficult to get reversed.

The cardinal reason why the young generation is confined to the four walls of their room is because they have more interesting activities inside.  Thanks to the unparalleled growth of technology, which provided them with smartphones and gadgets which support virtual reality games. When these curiosity-evoking games and activities are availed to them inside their own homes, it is quite natural that they would not go out for strenuous activities.

Another reason is because of the way which they are brought up. In the past, the population was thin, and children had enough safe places to play, hike or climb mountains. However, today, there are lack of such places, and parents do not want their children to take such risks. People have become narrow-minded, and they hardly encourage their children to socialise with the people around.

One has to understand the fact that young people have a lot of challenges if they are outdoors and get themselves engaged in such activities. Today’s young generation has got adjusted to the existing scenario, and they too do not want to change. Therefore, getting them back to the nature is a herculean task. Nevertheless, initiatives can be put forward to encourage them to get involved in such nature-friendly activities like arranging an adventure trip or a treasure hunt.

To conclude, it is clear that the primary reason why the young people prefer to be inside is the changed lifestyle, and if initiatives are taken to encourage them to be outdoors, the result would not be that much productive as expected.
