Controversy exists regarding the action of the Australian government who turns back the boats with illegal immigrants. When considering the country’s security interests and sovereignty, I believe such actions are unacceptable.

On the one hand, those who support such immigration focus on the humanitarian aspects of those who arrive the country. They believe only those who are in extreme needs of survival are expected to take the risks of such a long voyage in the turbulent sea. For example, many of such immigrants are from war-torn territories or from poverty-stricken areas of the world. It is humane to accept such people, shelter them and provide them a better standard of living.

On the other hand, those who are against such entry to the country highlight the threat the country would face with an increasing number of illegal immigrants. They believe there would be anti-socials among such illegal immigrants which can question the nation’s security. Another issue is that this population would create disharmony and intolerance among the native Australians which can result in social conflicts.

In my opinion, every country has its own policies to accept or reject migrants, this can be amendable based on the public interest of the native population. In addition, legal migration is still in operation in Australia and those who want to immigrate can make use of it.

To conclude, though in certain circumstances it is recommended to accept immigrants who face humanitarian crisis in their countries, it should be based on the country’s immigration policy. Therefore, there is no harm in discouraging any sorts of illegal entry to the country.
