MODEL ANSWER:

Criticisms arise against many modern schools which compel their  students to learn foreign languages. I too tend to agree to these critics, except in case of teaching children the popular global languages.

One of the major reasons why I oppose those schools’ move to force children learn foreign languages is because of the fact that it is an additional burden on them. To be precise, the way which they perceive things in their own language appears to be far easier than learning the same in a foreign language. It is a fact that today; school students have numerous activities, both academic and non-academic, and naturally learning an additional language is a burden for many of them.

The second reason is that many students do not have any interest in learning these languages. When a language is taught in such a situation, students would not make active efforts and the learning would prove very ineffective. In addition, in most schools which teach foreign languages, there would not be native teachers to teach those, which would also result in inappropriate teaching.

However, as the world is becoming a global village, and the significance of global languages is becoming greater, it becomes the need of students to learn such languages, if it is not their mother tongue. For example, there are many language institutes across the world where languages such as English, Spanish, French and Mandarin are taught to qualified professionals. Provided that this training was done at an earlier stage at school, it would have been more fruitful.

To conclude, though many students face some difficulties in learning foreign languages, it is always good to teach them languages which are expected to play crucial roles in the global communication sector as the same way science and math are taught at schools.
