Few people devote time to hobbies nowadays. Why do you think this is the case and what effect this has on the individual and society in general. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

The number of people who are engaged in some hobbies is shrinking alarmingly. Lack of time and interest appear to be the main reasons behind this, and it would have adverse effects on both the individual and the society.

One of the attributing factors behind this change is ineffective time management. To be precise, not many can engage in some kinds of hobbies because they cannot prioritize their time well. Many working people are seen forgetting their childhood hobbies like reading and gardening becuase they place their professional and family commitments much ahead of these.

Lack of interest is another factor. In the past, many found hobbies as activities to transform their freetime to moments of satisfaction. Unlike the past, when most children had at least a hobby, today’s children are enslaved by modern technology in the form of video games and social media activities. The popularity of virtual reality games can be seen as a pertinent example for this.

When analyzing the individual consequences of this change, people are seen less enthusiastic, emotionally numb and their intellectual abilities are seen arrested. Compared to the past, the modern generation has a much mechanical life, and is seen more dependent to technology.Turning to its effects on the society, most people are becoming introverts and self-centered, which cut down their social interaction time considerably. Poor attendence in community and social gatherings can be pointed as a best example for this.

To conclude, it is obvious that time and attitudes of modern man have a significant impact in determining the number of people who pursue hobbies today, and this transformation is neither good for individuals nor society.
