Owing to the fact that smoking is illegal in public places, it is strongly suggested that those who wish to smoke should leave the building. I feel this option can be implied only in exceptional cases, and the reasons are stated in the ensuing paragraphs.

The core reason why I tend to oppose the suggestion is because of the alternatives available other than leaving the building. To be precise, in a large firm, where a considerable proportion of employees are there, there would be a sizeable proportion of people who smoke. It is illogical to send them out to smoke as it is a time-wasting move. Instead, they can be provided with smoking zones inside the building like most international airports do. This can avoid the inconvenience caused and increase the goodwill of the company.

The second reason why I hesitate to approve the suggestion is because of the sense of discrimination. To be clearer, when a part of the workforce is sent out, they would feel that they are emotionally hurt just because they are smokers. This would adversely affect their attitude towards the company. Moreover, this also creates a negative attitude towards those who are sent out among the non-smokers in the building, and this would also create issues within the company.

However, in certain exceptional circumstances, for example in hospitals and schools, this should be practised. This is because these people are more vulnerable to the immediate presence of smokers.

To conclude, though there are some extra-ordinary situations in which smoking should be strictly prohibited in the building, considering the presence of alternatives and a harmonious co-existence with smokers, it is unjustifiable to send them out of the building if they wish to smoke.
