It is common to see that families of several countries are switching to international fast foods, replacing traditional foods on their dining tables. While some criticize this, pointing on its undesirable impacts on families and societies, I feel there is a greater truth on this.

From the family’s perspective, the worst expected outcome of this transformation is the deterioration of its members’ general health. To be precise, international fast foods have more fat and starch content, which add more calories to human body than what is desirable. These days many people live a sedentary life, and if they prefer to have such foods, the result will be obesity and other serious life-style diseases. Eventually, their health expense would be higher than that of normal. Comparatively, traditional foods have more fibre, less preservatives and additives, which is good for health.

From the society’s perspective, the main concern is the anticipated collapse of the local economy. Statistics show that McDonalds has 18,710 and KFC has 11,798 international outlets in 2018, and these numbers are growing in an unprecedented way. The demand of the locally produced food products, both raw and finished, is currently facing a huge competition from these multinational business giants. In other words, many local food chain businesses are expected to experience a premature closure in recent future.

However, there are opinions in favour of international fast foods, pointing at the faster life-style of modern people, where they have time-constraints to cook and feed. The acceptance of food distribution chains like Zomato in India is a clear indication of this.

To conclude, though there are circumstances in which people have to depend on international fast foods, it is not acceptable to completely replace traditional foods with it because of its adverse outcomes on both families and societies.
