In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their level of health and fitness is decreasing. What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve these?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.

In recent years, many are becoming overweight, less healthy and fail to maintain a physically fit body. There are two major causes behind this and with carefully planned measures, these issues can be mitigated.

Of the two key causes, the first is the change in the lifestyle of the people. In the past, most people were agile and did physically demanding works to earn their daily living. Later, machines replaced humans in most physically demanding works with the advent of sophisticated technology. For instance, even painting is now done by machines. Similarly, people started to follow unhealthy habits such as excessive drinking and to have unhealthy food and that too at odd times like midnight. In short, less exercise, bad habits and poor dietary pattern are the results of this lifestyle change and this is the major cause of this issue.

The second major cause for this is the less priority given to health and its maintenance these days. To be precise, today’s people consider money as more worthy than health and many think that if health issues occur, treatment is readily available in hospitals. This is the most probable reason why the modern working population has life-style diseases like obesity and diabetes.

Turning to the solutions, the most tangible one is to encourage the public to give utmost priority to health and its maintenance. Authorities should adopt ways to promote a healthy lifestyle such as discouraging fast food culture, drug dependence and to encourage the habit of physical exercise, irrespective of age.

To conclude, it is clear that the cardinal reasons why people are becoming overweight and less physically fit are related to the changing lifestyle and personal attitudes. These issues can be effectively mitigated if proper measures are adopted by the people as well as the authority.
