 It is suggested that the most effective way to address the problems of traffic and pollution is a hike in the price of fuels. Considering the fact that fuel is an essential commodity, I feel that it hardly makes any significant impact in solving these crises.

 The most important reason why I cannot accept a price hike of fuels is because fuel as an energy source has become an integral part of the smooth running of life in the modern era. As far as it plays a vital role, even a substantial increase in the price would not reflect any decline in the rate of pollution caused by vehicles and congestion on roads. At the same time, the move would cause financial difficulties among the common people, who have to spend more. Whether it is private vehicles or public vehicles, transportation should hardly face any hurdles for maintaining the normal life of people, and it is the responsibility of governments.

 Analysing the better options to curb the problem of traffic, the first which comes to my mind is the improvement of infrastructure in transportation, which includes the construction of elevated motorways, subways and making metro rails and monorails popular. A simultaneous implementation of stringent traffic laws and their effective monitoring can mitigate the issue further. Regarding pollution, governments can promote the most energy-efficient and less-polluting fuels like CNG instead of petrol and diesel. Laws can also be implemented to scrap older vehicles on roads, which are one of the major causes of pollution caused by motor vehicles.

 To conclude, it is clear that as far as fuel plays an integral part in the life of modern man, its price hike is not going to alter the traffic and pollution problems. Instead both these issues can be solved better if addressed individually.
