Spacious public spaces and squares are generally seen as essential elements of all important urban centres. Even though, it is a challenge for any town planner, I think these are vital for a city.

The primary reason why I emphasise the need of these is because almost all growing cities are suffocating of lack of space. To be precise, major cities have now become concrete gardens, which are growing vertical, accommodating more people in limited spaces. The neo-urban residents have to adjust in these enclosed spaces for weeks, months and even years. A park or a walking area for them is very essential to release their stress and to rejuvenate their minds.

The second reason why I feel that these spaces are needed is because there should be spaces in every city to host events which are important to the public. To be clearer, it is difficult and expensive for organisers to rent a place to conduct events such as awareness programmes and cultural events. If there is a square, which can host such programmes, it can attract a lot of spectators, and the motive of such programmes is met.

However, the real challenge is for the town-planners, and that is to find enough space for this. Even if they could find some space, there would be pressing needs, which are to be given more priority. Despite these issues, I feel that they have to satisfy the need of such open spaces.

To conclude, though there exist some practical challenges ahead of the authorities to find large public spaces and squares, as cities are growing, these needs are becoming more demanding.
