A considerable proportion of people relate obesity to the climbing popularity of fast foods in the modern society. I feel imposing an additional tax on these type of food can reduce its consumption and has to be seen as a positive step to fight obesity.
To begin, it is to be noted that there are a number of fast food outlets mushrooming across the world, and one of the prime factors behind it is that it sells products at an affordable rate. When this factor is reversed, naturally the amount of consumption would go down. For example, for a person who can afford to have two hamburgers daily would either cut the number or become an infrequent consumer.
Another factor which is to be noted is that the strong fast food chain attracts a number of newer customers. The best way to slow down this process is to hike the price of popular fast foods. This would make people remain its occasional customers, and thus to an extent, obesity can be reduced in the society.
I admit the fact that this move is not going to make a significant impact on people who are addicts. However, I need to see the idea is far better than extreme steps like banning fast food.
To conclude, life-style diseases like obesity are burning issues in the modern world, and of course fast food has a definitive role in making people obese. It is the responsibility of every government to fight this issue, and I think the idea of levying tax on it is a wise idea.
