Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language has serious social and practical problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

It is argued that a country which compels its migrants to speak its own language creates some issues, both socially and practically. I agree to the view completely.

From the social perspective, for a foreigner, it is difficult to understand the culture and tradition of a country because these are very closely related to the language of that country. It would be difficult for a person from a different country to be proficient as the native speaker, and he would not understand in what context the vocabulary is used in different situations. It is quite natural that he might use it inappropriately and the native speakers would get annoyed.

Turning to the practical problems it may cause, the worst is the difficulty in learning some languages. Although it is easy for a British resident to learn American accent, it is not easy for him to lean Arab, Hindi or Mandarin Chinese. In such a situation, communication is likely to get limited severely. The life in China would be a nightmare for a British citizen since the Chinese hardly write or speak in English. This will be more challenging than in case of the life of an illegal migrant to the UK.

To conclude, there are obvious practical and social difficulties when a person moves into a foreign country which insists its migrants to speak its native language. It should be also noted that these issues would be worse when linguistic and cultural gaps are wide.
