People are seen divided in their attitudes whether high school students should be given the opportunity to ask questions and criticize their teachers in classrooms. I feel that this can be encouraged; however, it should not disrupt the class.

The main reason why people criticize such a move is that they feel this can cause disruption in the class. To be precise, many students take this opportunity to ask less-relevant questions, and this would reduce the invaluable lecture time. Some students, who are attention-seeking, are more likely to misuse this opportunity, and the entire class would be less-productive. There would be also instances when students tend to bully their teachers, and this would create a passive conflict between the teacher and the students.

By contrast, the proponents of this move point at the quality of the class, which would improve if criticisms are encouraged. To be clearer, teachers would be more prepared to the class, and they keep updated with the lecture they are going to deliver. From the students’ perspective, they get better clarification, and this increases their confidence level. A healthy debate with the teacher is an essential part of the academic curriculum, and this would be beneficial for the better performance of students in their studies.

I too admit that the aforementioned move would be more productive than what is expected. It gives a student recognition and dignity in the class. However, the environment should be regulated well, and specific time should be allotted for this, without which the move is expected to be counter-productive.

To conclude, it is clear that high school students reap a lot of benefits when they are given the opportunity to criticize their teachers in the classroom. This is true only if the situation is set in a controlled atmosphere.
