Many students do not finish school. Why is this?  How can the problem be solved?

Despite introducing promoting measures to educate children at school, many countries see a lot of students failing to complete their school education. The issues are mostly socio-economic related, and cannot be addressed effectively without long-term objectives.

The most pressing issue behind the school dropouts is the lack of economic security of families. To be precise, many are still not earning enough to lead a satisfactory life because of the poor economic situations. Low wages, unemployment and gender discrimination in wages are examples of some of these circumstances. The second issue is the inappropriate social circumstances. Children of sole parents, drug dependent and underprivileged parents are often seen quitting schools even before their high schools.

Apart from these two external factors, school drop-outs are often reported because of lack of interest of students. Many schools fail to maintain a friendly and appeasing atmosphere to the students. In some cases, teachers are not able to solve the underlying issues of students related to their academics and often children feel their teachers show partiality between the studious and the non-studious. It is interesting that psychological trauma such as bullying and ragging can also lead to school dropouts.

Turning to the solutions, the state has to focus more on educational sector, and allot more funds to attract more students towards schools by providing them free education and to maintain the strength in the class. A student-friendly atmosphere should be created in the schools.  The results of this can be seen only if governments have long-term plans to uplift the socio-economic status of families.

To conclude, there are both internal and external factors which make a school student a dropout. The solutions are not easy to be achieved within a short period,  but is practical for a determined government with long-term plans.
