You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

News editors decide what to broadcast on television and what to print in newspapers. What factors do you think influence these decisions? Do we become used to bad news? Would it be better if more good news was reported?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge. Write at least 250 words.

It is generally believed that news editors have various interests and compulsions on what to print on newspapers and telecast on the TV. Accepting this as a truth, I believe that we are slowly addicted to ‘bad’ news, and I think the editors can report news which is more positive in nature.

To begin, every news editor would have his own propaganda based on the interest of his employer. For example, if the owner of a particular TV channel or newspaper has a specific interest in promoting the sales of a particular product, he wants his news editor to frame positive reports on the product. De-promotion is also possible by the media. The second factor which decides the news or programmes which are reaching the public is the censorship or compulsions from the authority which controls the media. Most news editors are vigilant in editing the articles and programmes in favor of the state-controlled information and broadcasting department.

When we are assessing the news what is seen, read or heard today on the modern media, we can say, most are disturbing. To be clearer, in order to hike the rating of the newspaper or TV, editors focus on negative news like murder, extortion and rape. This is because of the fact that people are curious to know what is happening unusually. However, when a society becomes immersed in these kinds of news, their normal behavior would be affected adversely, and I would suggest that new editors should focus on publicizing more positive news to reverse the situation. They should also see this as their social responsibility.

To conclude, it is nearly a fact that vested interests and state compulsions are the two main factors which influence the news which reach the people. It is also understood that modern media is obsessed with negative news, and this has to be addressed seriously.
