In a scenario when tertiary education is becoming increasingly expensive, there arise an opinion that universities should consider fee reduction for those students who are less-privileged in the society. Although I agree to this, I do not feel it is easy to implement.

The reason why I support such fee reductions is because of the fragile economic status of those students. To be precise, students hail from a rural setup or from a poor family background may fail to afford the hefty tuition fee of a standard university course. There are also instances when ambitious students who cannot enrol in their favourite courses just because they are from broken families. Many of such students have unveiled potentials, which would remain unrecognised just because opportunities are shut before them. In other words, if universities slash their fee for such students, many hidden potentials would come to mainstream, and this would uplift the overall productivity and economic status of a country.

However, many universities drag their feet when asked to implement a fee reduction for the underprivileged. This is because the cost of education has risen dramatically over the recent decades. This is not just confined to the salary of university lecturers and infrastructural facilities, but to wider areas like meeting the technological expenses and examination expenses, to name but a few. For instance, from the enrolment of a medical student, till he graduates, the university has to cover a huge expense for him, and if discounted fee is provided to a group of medical students, the financial condition of the university would be in trouble. Therefore, many universities encourage scholarships, governmental, community and non-governmental aids instead.

To conclude, even though financial consideration for the less-fortunate students by the universities is a good idea, which I would recommend, it is not easily practicable.
