You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

People should look after their health because this is a duty to the society not just a personal benefit. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge. Write at least 250 words.

It is argued that when individuals take care of their health, it not only benefits them personally, but also the society. I firmly align to this, and the supporting reasons are enlisted in the ensuing paragraphs.

The predominant reason why I tend to agree to the argument wholeheartedly is because of the fact that only when the population of a society is healthy, it becomes productive and progressive. To explain it further, when an individual is healthy, he can gain personally by means of working or studying more time. By this means, he may earn more or can conquer more heights. At the same time, he can also actively participate in social activities and programmes like charity work, voluntary assistance, festivals and concerts.

On the other hand, if a person neglects his health, he would soon become incapable of doing his own daily activities, and would need a physical assistance for carrying out those. He would have to spend a huge sum from his own or his family’s earnings to fulfil his health needs. For example, a chronic smoker would have to shed a considerable amount of money in his later life for his treatment, as he is most likely to have lung cancer or related ailments. A part of his treatment is to be borne by the state, and the taxpayer has to suffer. In short, for the society, such an individual is seen as a burden.

After analysing both the aforementioned paragraphs, it is clear that only when a person is healthy, he can make personal gains. The society needs such individuals rather than a bunch of unhealthy ones who are seen often seen as economic burdens by both their own families and the society.
