Not many can deny the role of parents in the growth and development of children. However, there are some who think that external influence has a greater role in this process. I do believe that both these are essential factors for a child’s growth, but the way it fosters a child differs.

To begin with, one should perceive that home is the fundamental institute for children, and parents act as role models there. To be clearer, a child lays platform for his basic habits and behavioral patterns from his home as it is his primary learning environment and it is from where he finds his first teachers: father and mother. Parental influence thus becomes the most basic factor which can influence the developmental process of a child. It can be seen that characteristics of parents are followed by their children till they grow older, and even it is passed intact to the next generation.

Nevertheless, one should acknowledge that only parental influence cannot completely mould a child to a mature adult. There are some crucial external factors such as the teachers, society, and life experiences. These factors influence a child at varying proportions at varying time intervals. For example, at an early stage, when children are exposed to school and college atmospheres, the influence of teachers is prominent. Society’s influence on a child is seen lesser when he is at school or college, but when he is out of these institutions, the social influence gains strength. Lastly, the influence of experience gained from life fluctuates throughout a person’s life till he dies.

To conclude, it is clear that parental influence and external factors have distinct influences at different stages of a child’s development.
