Some people believe that violent media directly results in violent behaviour.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is argued that violence can be triggered when the media portray violence. I certainly believe that there is some truth in this, but it does not happen always.

The prime reason why I tend to agree to the argument is because of the adaptive behaviour of the humans. To be precise, man is a keen observer and learner, and he has a superior quality to adapt to the circumstances around him. It is quite natural that he would acclimatize with aggression and violence, if he is constantly exposed to such instances. Here, media plays a key role in publicising violence through exaggerated presentations both through the print and the visual media.

The second reason behind my alignment to the viewpoint is because of the persuasive behaviour of media. To explain it further, entertainment media like movies showcases famous celebrities in action scenes, which portray extreme violence like murder and socially unaccepted behaviours like drug abuse. The viewers, especially, the younger generation are often seen imitating such scenes, and eventually transform themselves to anti-socials. The attack on the World Trade Centre by the beginning of this century is a quintessential example for this.

However, there are a sizeable proportion of people who have the potential to think and act rationally. They perceive violence in media in a different way, become aware of such unforeseen events and become more vigilant in their life.

To conclude, it is clear that media often creates awareness about crimes and violence by showcasing them. However, I believe, in most cases, it opens newer opportunities of violence in the society.
