Some people claim that not enough of the waste from home is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for government to make it a legal requirement. To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge. Write at least 250 words.

It is argued that governments have to implement legislations to make people take recycling their domestic wastes more seriously. I feel this is a good idea, but other ways to encourage people to do so are also much appreciated.

The first reason why I think that laws should be enforced for promoting recycling is because of the increasing quantity of non-biodegradable wastes dumped from each household. To be precise, as the world is developing at a faster pace, and consumerism is promoted passively in every corner, the amount of such wastes (plastic bottles, electronic wastes et cetera) generated is growing unprecedently. This possess a real threat to the environment, and such an alarming situation can be tackled only by legal measures.

The second reason is the irrational use of non-biodegradable products and their unscientific disposal. It is evident that not many households are seriously concerned of the harm they are causing to the nature. Even though many governments are making efforts to encourage the policies of recycling,  not many such items like plastic carry bags  are treated like disposable items. To reverse the situation, and to make people think recycling is their responsibility, legislation is a positive idea.

However, legislations alone cannot bring about visible changes in near future. Governments should ensure adequate facilities in every residential area like the provision of separate trash bins for collecting non-biodegradable waste for recycling. Placing used plastic bottle booths at every street is a good example of one such move. Authorities can also announce prizes for the best recycling colony to encourage the move.

To conclude, it is clear that more domestic wastes would be recycled as legislations for recycling comes. The fact is that this can be made more effective when it is promoted by other means.
